The End of Another Year

Twenty-Five years ago I began running residence halls at Lyndon State College as a student all director and here I am after twenty-two years at Landmark College and still living in with students. Over that time I have gotten married, raised three children, and now we have a rescued greyhound. Over the years I have worked with literally thousands of students and dozens of other hall directors (Head Residents or Resident Deans) and just as many if not more Resident Assistants. This time of year is so bittersweet for me because you say good bye to so many young people who have got it and are moving on and yet you know that you have to catch your breath for the next batch coming in just a few months. Coaching has also been a huge part of my career at Landmark and those in some cases become the athletes I have become closest with along with RA's on my staff. They move on but almost always stay in touch. But, losing them to the future is never easy.

Living in has been very tough on my wife. I truly believe that it has been beneficial for my three children but it has deprived my wife of  the home she has always wanted and that is a price I would never have chosen this path had I realized the cost to her. Regret, is one of those words I did not think I would ever utter because I never regretted flunking out of the University of Vermont because it led me to my wife and I never regretted working as a janitor in a mental institution because it led me to the University of Vermont. I hope that someday I can make this up to her but for now I can only make the best of our current life.

It is at this time of year when one thinks of the future. I am now fifty-one years old and can only be the best that I can for my players, my students, my residents, my kids, and mpost of all for my wife. May next years closing lead me closer to fulfilling her dreams and may she find peace in the rgwoth and success of our wonderful kids.
